Nambi Narayanan receives justice in the ISRO spy case, as the SC directs Kerala to pay 50L.
The Supreme Court ordered a probe into Kerala police officials’ involvement after ruling on Friday that former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan was “arrested needlessly, tortured, and exposed to mental brutality” in an espionage case from 1994. The 76-year-old Narayanan received a 50 lakh compensation award from a panel led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra for suffering mental anguish in the case.
A three-member panel led by its former judge D K Jain was established by the bench, which also included Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, to investigate whether Narayanan had been set up in the spy case. The NHRC awarded him interim compensation of 10 lakh in March 2001 after hearing from both parties and taking the Supreme Court’s decision of April 29, 1998, into consideration.
